Prompt for Jan 4: Quote me – the quote I return to again and again – what it is and why it moves me.
When I was a senior in high school, I was taking college prep courses in addition to my regular courses and my load was heavy. My mother gave me a small card with a poem written on it. We had cubicles at my school and each cubicle had a bulletin board for posting goals for each day along with a star chart for every completion of each subject. There was plenty of room left on my board, so I posted the card on it and I read it several times throughout my school day.
It was inspirational to me and I have to say that it did contribute to my ability to get through my work and graduate.
This poem is the quote that helped to keep me going:
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.
I lost the card years ago and I hadn’t thought about it in quite some time. Now that I have been reminded of the poem, I am going to write it down and frame it on the wall above my desk.
I am grateful for the prompt!
